History, Philosophy and Aims

In 1995, the Tindall family established The Tindall Foundation, driven by a desire to support initiatives in New Zealand which assist communities to help themselves and to heal problems rather than manage them.

The vision for The Tindall Foundation is that it should play a supportive role in the philanthropic sector in New Zealand. It collaborates with other organisations and consultants working in the field, as well as drawing on the embedded knowledge, professionalism and expertise of the not-for-profit sector in the allocation of its donations.

The Tindall Foundation is currently the largest independent private foundation in Australasia.

Funding Focus Areas

In an endeavour to achieve meaningful and sustainable outcomes, the Foundation has identified a number of focus or Programme Areas for funding. These Programme Areas are:

  • Supporting Families and Social Services

  • Encouraging Enterprise and Employment

  • Caring for our Environment and Preserving Biodiversity

  • Strengthening the Third Sector

  • Promoting Generosity and Giving

For information  our criteria and priorities,  please go to  Application.

From time to time, the Foundation considers expressions of interest in other categories on an exceptional basis. Great care is taken in the evaluation and resource allocation process to avoid unnecessary duplication of effort whilst building on the endeavours of all stakeholders. Please contact us if you require more information.

Feature Project

We are pleased to make available on our website, Glen Saunders' report on Microfinance Funds in New Zealand , which was commissioned by The Tindall Foundation.  A PDF file of this report is posted under 'Feature Projects'.  This high-quality research reports on prospects and strategies for the financial sustainability of members of Ethical Investment Aotearoa (EIA) - a grouping of community loan and microfinance funds in  New Zealand .  It provides valuable insights for funds and funders into the opportunities and challenges they face achieving sustainability.
